Itinerary

Overview

Gabala is one of the oldest cities in Azerbaijan. The name of these lands is reminiscent of the magnificent fortress walls of the ancient city of Gabala, which was the capital of ancient Caucasian Albania for a period of 900 years.

Gabala is located 225 km from Baku. Gabala is one of the most beautiful places in Azerbaijan. Cool weather, dense forests, rivers, and lakes can attract the attention of excursionists.

Gabala is located in the territory of the Sheki-Zagatala zone, probably in the southern part of Dagestan and Georgia. Near modern Gabala, there are ruins of the ancient city of Toxmin, which is about 2000 years old. The area is rich in walnut and chestnut forests, each of which is about 500 years old. Blossoming chestnuts in spring are a unique sight.

Juma Mosque

During the Gabala tour, on the way to Gabala, we will first visit the Shamakhi Juma Mosque. One of the ten oldest and ten largest mosques in Azerbaijan

According to legend, the foundation of the Shamakhi Juma Mosque was laid in the 8th century. The famous Arab general Maslama ibn Abdul Malik, the brother of the Umayyad caliph I Walid (705-715), chose Shamakhi as his residence when he invaded the Caucasus and Dagestan. In that year, the Arab emirs repaired and strengthened the fortress of this ancient and rich city and carried out new construction works in its territory. Juma Mosque, which is the main and only witness of this work, demonstrates how influential Shamakhi was at that time with its large dimensions and magnificent architecture. The mosque was built in 743–744 years. The Shamakhi Juma Mosque is the oldest mosque in the South Caucasus after the Darband Juma Mosque (built in 734).

The mosque, which was restored several times in the Middle Ages, was destroyed during the Shamakhi earthquakes of 1856 and 1902 and was first restored by Gasim boy Hajibababeyov and then by Iosif Ploshko. The last restoration work in the mosque, which was burned by Armenians in 1918, was carried out in 2010–2013 according to the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.

Lake Nohur

Lake Nohur in Gabala is one of the most famous tourist spots in our country, and you will talk about an excursion to this lake during our tour to Gabala. The lake is unusual and beautiful; it is surrounded by mountains and shale beds and looks like a mirror through which wooded slopes are visible. The peculiarity of this reservoir is that it is located in the high mountains, it is easily accessible, and you can come here by car or even stay at the local rest area.

With its unique nature, Lake Nohur, located 3 kilometers east of Gabala, resembles an annular lake located in the valley between the mountains of Gullur, Goydagh, and Yumru. During the winter, the surface of Lake Nohur completely freezes. In the winter of 1953, the ice cover on the surface of the lake was 40–50 cm.

Yeddi Gozal Waterfall

Also, on our Gabala tour, you must visit the “Yeddi Gozal” waterfall, which is located on the edge of Gabala city, near Vandam village. If you want to admire this wonder of nature, you have to go there very early.

“Yeddi Gozal” waterfall is located in the Vendam settlement of Gabala city. This waterfall is near Ruskan village. Seven Beauties Waterfalls flow from the highest peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. Seven Beautiful Waterfalls in Gabala, one of the most popular tourist spots in Gabala, are 6 kilometers from Vandam village and 3 kilometers from the main road in Puskan. Although there are not seven waterfalls, there are seven stairs here, and you can climb the mountain with these stairs.

Only two small waterfalls are visible below the waterfall. To see the other five waterfalls, it was necessary to climb the stairs, which required a little physical strength. However, a mysterious sight awaits those who pass this difficult road. The waterfall is always dark and yellow because it is located in a dense forest that is not affected by the sun’s rays.

At the end of autumn, winter, and early spring, it is not possible to climb the waterfall, as the area around the waterfall and the waterfall are covered with ice.

Hypertensive patients and people suffering from cardiovascular diseases should consult a doctor before visiting the waterfall, as the altitude causes shortness of breath. Tourists are only allowed to climb the fifth step, and only brave souls risk climbing the fifth, sixth, and seventh steps.

Tufandagh Recreation Center

Tufandag resort is located 4 km from Gabala, the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. The distance from Gabala International Airport is 20 km, and from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, it is 220 km. The resort has all the conditions for a great family vacation. There are training schools with qualified instructors who will help you not only get on skis and snowboards for the first time but also improve your skills and climb to a new level. Children will love the indoor playgrounds. Babysitting services are available in hotel complexes. The Tufandag complex can accommodate up to 3000 guests at the same time. In addition to 5-star hotels, the complex includes restaurants, cafes, bars, relaxation areas, ski and adult skiing, and rental and repair equipment. The tracks of Tufandag Gabala Ski Center are of different complexity and the total length of the ski tracks is 17 km. Skiing is divided into three groups: beginners, those with the ability to drive, and full-time professional skiers.

Gabala Shooting Club

The best part of the Gabala tour is the shooting club. It is an amazing institution that combines a professional sports base with a social and recreational enterprise. On the one hand, athletes and shooters are trained here, and on the other hand, almost everyone, even tourists, can come and shoot here. On the one hand, important people like to go here. On the other hand, this does not interfere with the normal life of the club.
